TOMIS BRIEF

Montana start-up seeks extremely talented VP of Engineering to help pioneer big data analytics and marketing automation in the Tours and Activities industry.

You must have experience hiring and leading a team of blackbelt engineers and a burning desire to scale a world-class engineering organization. You should be excited about the challenge of planning for, designing and delivering a product that will eventually support trillions of data points and leverage them to transform an industry.

And you should be able to do so in about half the time that most competent people think possible.

You should have a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or the equivalent. Top-notch communication skills are essential. Expect talented, motivated, and interesting co-workers who love the outdoors, each other, and solving absurdly big problems. You will join a management team with deep expertise in digital marketing, machine learning, data architecture and the Tours and Activities Industry.

Must be willing to relocate to the Missoula area (we will help cover moving costs).

At TOMIS, we believe that tour and activity companies are a keystone benefit to local communities and the tourists that visit them. We are obsessed with providing these businesses with the tools they need to grow, thrive, and compete on a level playing field with the giant corporations of the travel industry.

The tours and activities industry is a $183B severely underserved industry. And it’s growing with millennial purchasing power.

But, it remains one of the world’s largest industries without Billion $ company helping suppliers aggregate their data and automate their marketing.

Why?

The industry is dominated by 100k+ small businesses with complex workflows, small budgets, and a lack of technical know-how. For years, this precluded the development of a digital foundation upon which to build a marketing platform.

But that has changed.

Modern reservation systems have digitized tens of thousands of tour providers over the last 5 years.

Despite this, each individual company is still marketing its services in a silo – akin to the individual bookseller pre-Amazon.

There is tremendous potential in aggregating this data and using machine learning/AI to automate marketing efforts, increase conversion rates, optimize pricing, build booking propensity models, and share leads.

And that’s exactly what TOMIS is doing. Our vision is to:

  2. Scale into additional underserved verticals.

WHY WE’RE HIRING A VP ENGINEERING

As we scale our engineering team, there are 3 large problems we’d like to solve, and one big problem we’d like to preempt.

Current Problem #1: Attract and hire TOP engineering talent as we expand

Current Problem #2: Build strong technical infrastructure as we prepare to scale existing SaaS revenue streams and turn on additional ones

Current Problem #3: Plan a tight product roadmap that balances innovative feature development with technical considerations. Execute it with flawless on-time delivery

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve as a key member of the management team that sets TOMIS’s strategic direction.
  2. Craft a detailed plan to execute on the product needs of TOMIS’s corporate strategy
  3. Recruit, hire, support, inspire, manage, and lead a team of exceptional engineers.
  4. Formulate long-term objectives and standards of performance for the department.
  5. Assure engineering achieves objectives and project completion within budget and time frame.
  6. Be a student of current industry trends. Ensure TOMIS maintains and expands its technology leadership position.
  7. Provide technical direction and guidance, as well as hands-on help and support: be happy to get in the mud and roll around.
  8. Identify, implement, and refine the necessary formal process to support the product development process.
  9. Hire, promote, train, and support our first layer of engineering managers as we grow

You should be able to OWN all these things while shipping quality product and giving the rest of the organization transparency into the process.

QUALIFICATIONS + SKILLS

  1. Experience: Minimum, 10+ years of software experience, with at least 5 years in a management position.
  2. You are a blackbelt engineer yourself
  3. Proven ability to recruit and hire other blackbelt engineers
  4. Proven ability to create and lead a thriving engineering culture that retains, challenges, grows, supports, and educates blackbelt engineers
  5. You can create a product roadmap that balances innovative feature builds with tech debt and infrastructure considerations
  6. Proven ability to execute on a product roadmap with on-time delivery
  7. Strong relationship management, strategy development, project management, problem-solving and change management skills.
  8. Professional and positive approach, self-motivated, strong in building relationships, team player, dynamic, creative with the ability to work on own initiative.
  9. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Your role as a TOMIS Marketing Manager will be both evolving and exciting. You will be working directly with the TOMIS team to develop, construct, monitor, and report out on multifaceted digital marketing campaigns for our clients in the tourism industry. This position will be an instrumental member of the Business Operations team with tremendous potential for growth.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
• Cannot work remote. Candidate must be located in Missoula, MT
• Minimum of 2 years of applicable work or academic experience
• Must work well and communicate effectively with a small team, using the Kanban approach to the Agile methodology
• Highly organized with grave attention to detail and the ability to find the right answers quickly
• Experience creating email campaigns, automation, audience segmentation, and retargeting
• In-depth understanding of website analytics
• Content marketing experience
• Develop and promote digital campaigns for clients across Facebook, Instagram, MailChimp, LinkedIn, and Google My Business
• Monitor and analyze sales and marketing metrics (web traffic, SEO, social, paid campaigns) to ensure success, using the agile methodology to adjust as needed
• Generate innovative ideas to promote brands and businesses in the tourism industry

DESIRED ADDITIONAL SKILLS
• Technical SEO experience is a major plus

We are in search of an innovative Back End Developer who can wear many hats, will positively enhance our work culture, and is eager to realize their full potential. Our ideal candidate will have a both extensive experience as a developer as well as a genuine desire to learn.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
Your role as TOMIS’ Back End Developer you will be both evolving and exciting. You will be working directly with the TOMIS front-end engineering team to plan and construct and maintain the TOMIS platform. This position will be an instrumental member of the development team with potential growth into a senior management position.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
• Cannot work remote. Candidate must be located in Missoula, MT
Minimum of 4 years of applicable experience
• Must work well and communicate effectively with a small team, using the Kanban approach to the Agile methodology
Ability to create and follow thorough documentation
Experience developing quality RESTful APIs
Must have a strong background in Python using the Django REST framework.
Experience with unit testing and test-driven development
Ability to effectively lead multiple projects at the same time and manage time and prioritized task management
Experience utilizing 3rd-party APIs, such as Google API, Mailchimp, Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook, etc

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Degree or certificate in relevant and/or combination of experience highly recommended.

TOMIS is an automated marketing intelligence platform for activity providers. TOMIS (Tour Operator Marketing Intelligence Software) levels the playing field for SMBs (starting with tour operators) to navigate the increasingly complex world of digital marketing, allowing them to raise their visibility and drive sales. TOMIS is a machine learning engine that uses AI technology to constantly predict optimal marketing placement options across dozens of platforms (Facebook, Google, Website…) and deliver optimized recommended actions based on recent and historical sales/marketing data.
